Statement.
As a painter, I have always been interested in the indeterminate space between abstraction and representation - that which is neither entirely flat nor entirely illusory - and how one becomes the other and vice versa. Similarly, I’m interested in creation as it relates to nature. And so, though the imagery and space in each of my paintings might suggest some “thing” or some place; it’s somewhere as yet unformed. I hope the paintings suggest a place in the process of being created, or perhaps destroyed, but somehow not fully embodied.
I try to maintain a balance of both accident and control in order to leave evidence of my “hand” in the work, as well as the suggestion of mechanical processes. I also try to convey a certain quality of light and color so that the viewer will experience these paintings first as a phenomenal or retinal experience and only secondly as a cognitive experience.
